While his exploits in the Edgbaston Test match against India won him applause from all quarters, James Anderson had no such luck in the game of golf on Sunday.
Enjoying an extra day off after the first Test against India which ended on Day 4, England’s fast-bowling duo of Anderson and Stuart Broad went out for a round of golf at the Stoke Park course in Buckinghamshire where the senior quick narrowly avoided a nasty injury.
Anderson, who is an avid golfer, was taking a swing on an uneven surface surrounded by trees at the course when the ball somehow hit him flush on his face instead of going straight in the direction of the shot.
It all happened in a flash which is why it is difficult to make out whether the ball richoted off the tree in front of him or Anderson sliced the ball so hard that it hit him on the face.
Anderson immediately covered his face with his palm but only had himself to blame for the blow. England’s highest wicket taker in Tests is however, ‘perfectly fine’ as revealed by Broad himself, who made a video of the incident and shared it on his social media accounts.
Anderson is the leader of England’s bowling attack and an injury at this point in time would have been disastrous for the home team as they gear up for the second Test against India starting August 9.
England won the first match by 31 runs at Edgbaston last Saturday with Anderson finishing with 4 wickets while Broad picked up a couple in the second innings.
The first game was also England’s 1000th Test match which they won on the fourth day by bowling out India for 162, who needed 194 for victory.
The match was a thriller as the fortunes fluctuated from one team to another throughout the course of the match.
The second Test will be played at Lord’s where England haven’t had a lot of success off late.
England have announced two changes to their 13-member squad for the next game with uncapped 20-year-old batsman Ollie Pope and all-rounder Chris Woakes coming back into the team.
Dawid Malan has been dropped from the squad while star all-rounder Ben Stokes will miss the Test as he is facing a court hearing next week in Bristol.
England Test squad: Joe Root (c), Alastair Cook, Keaton Jennings, Ollie Pope, Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler (wk), Chris Woakes, Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid, Sam Curran, Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Jamie Porter.
