The 19-year-old son of a former Manipur minister died after falling off the terrace of a bar-cum-restaurant in Hauz Khas Village on Saturday afternoon under mysterious circumstances. His family is crying foul play behind the incident claiming that the boy cannot commit suicide.
Police have registered a case of culpable homicide. They are likely to contact the excise department as the youth was reportedly under the influence of alcohol and as per rules, liquor cannot be served to a person below 25 years of age.
The deceased, Siddharth, had recently completed his schooling from Delhi. He had been staying with his elder sister in Safdarjung and was planning to pursue further studies. Siddharth is the son of Manipur’s former Home and education minister M Okendru.
According to police, he had gone to Matchbox restaurant in Hauz Khas Village and ordered some drinks for himself. He preferred to sit at the terrace. It was learnt that his driver had dropped him to the restaurant and returned home after he instructed him to go back.
“After some time, restaurant employees were alerted that a boy was lying in a pool of blood on the road. He was rushed to Safdarjung hospital and a call was made to the police control room at around 4 pm. When the police team reached the spot, they found broken flower pots and Siddharth’s shoes. Meanwhile police were informed that he succumbed to injuries in the hospital,” a senior police official said.
As per CCTV footage, a little before 4 pm, Siddharth was found climbing the stairs of My Bar, a restaurant adjacent to Matchbox. He reportedly went up to the terrace where no one was allowed. And a few minutes later, he was found on the road.
Additional DCP (South) Chinmoy Biswal said the body would be handed over to his family members after an autopsy on Sunday. His sister said the death was suspicious, and police officials said the case was being investigated from all possible angles.
“We are probing all angles. We are probing if it was an accidental fall or he was pushed off the terrace. We are also looking at CCTV footage from nearby buildings,” a senior police officer said.
