Rs 7.5 cr cash seized as Hyderabad Police bust hawala racket in poll-bound Telangana

A whopping Rs 7.51 crore, meant to bribe voters, was seized from four hawala operators on Wednesday by a city task force with the assistance of a flying squad and Static Surveillance Team in a joint operation carried out at different locations.

Hyderabad Police has revealed that the unaccounted money was coming from other states and abroad through hawala channels for use in the forthcoming Legislative Assembly elections in Telangana. The hawala operators were planning to distribute crores of rupees to the voters in the state.

“The amount have been transferred online into the accounts of shell companies of hawala operators. To facilitate this, the operators are falsifying documents, giving false declarations to open such bank accounts and thereby cheating the banks and the government,” said Hyderabad Police Commissioner Anjini Kumar while speaking to India Today.

Four persons were caught along with cash by the Hyderabad Police but some accused involved in this process were still absconding.

The seizure details were being intimated to the Enforcement Directorate and the Income Tax Department for further proceedings.

So far, Hyderabad Police has seized over Rs 70 crore cash from across the state ahead of elections. Also, over two lakh litres of liquor worth around Rs 5 crore were recovered.
