Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and Dalit leader Jignesh Mewani held a close-door meeting for around 30 minutes near Navsari, about 280km from Ahmedabad, on Friday.
Mewani, who is spearheading Dalit agitation in Gujarat, said Gandhi had agreed to meet most of their demands, including justice and compensation to Una flogging victims and land for all landless Dalits.
“We had 17 demands. Rahul Gandhi heard me out patiently and said whatever we are demanding is our basic right as per the Constitution. He also agreed to include these demands in the party’s manifesto,” Mewani told.
He, however, claimed that they didn’t talks about any electoral alliance. “We neither talked about extending our support to the Congress nor did he (Gandhi) ask for. In the last 22 years that the BJP has ruled Gujarat, it has never cared to talk to Dalits. But Rahul Gandhi met us within 22 hours and 47 lakh Dalits in the state should keep this in mind while voting,” he said.
