Principal of govt school accused of caste discrimination, parents lay siege to school

An ugly spat occurred between parents and the principal of a government school in Thittakudi, Cudallore.

About a hundred students study at the municipal school in Thittakudi where Anusuya, the school’s principal works along with three other teachers.

On July 21, a student had reportedly attended school wearing a torn shirt. Anusuya is alleged to have scolded him using his caste name.

The students claimed that two days ago, a group of students belonging to lower castes were made to sit separately. The parents, however, said that this came to their knowledge when their children complained and protested outside the school on Tuesday.

After a few parents confronted Anusuya, the spat turned ugly. Anusuya was seen pulling the hair of a parent and then was attacked by other women. The principal and the parents were also caught throwing slippers at each other.

The police reached the spot along with district Tehsildar and district education officers. The parents have filed a complaint against Anusuya for discriminating against children on the grounds of caste.

The authorities promised to investigate the matter and take action. Anusuya has been asked to go on a leave until further notice.
