A minor girl, who was returning home after attending the Independence Day function in her school, was allegedly assaulted and raped at knife point inside the Children Traffic Park in Sector 23 on Tuesday morning.
The 12-year-old girl is a student of class VIII in a government school of the city.
Police officers investigating the case said that while returning home she was overpowered by a middle-aged man near the isolated area of the park at around 9.30 am. The accused took the girl behind the bushes and raped her, said a cop at the crime scene.
Police officers said that the accused also attacked the girl with knife and injured her. After raping her, the accused fled the scene leaving her in the park. The victim reached home and informed her parents, who approached the police.
As soon as the information was received by the police, senior officers including SSP Eish singhal reached the Children Traffic Park. The SSP inspected the spot and later the statement of the girl was recorded. A dog squad was also called to the spot. Singhal called up the all the DSPs and SHOs at traffic park and more than five hours they were on the spot. During the investigation police locked the both gate of the traffic park and did not allow media inside.
