Jharkhand shut after Opposition calls state-wide bandh to protest land acquisition amendments

Astatewide bandh has been called in Jharkhand today by opposition parties including Jharkhand Mukri Morcha (JMM) to protest against the Land Acquisition Amendment Act, 2013.

The police-administration has made adequate security arrangements like installation of CCTV cameras and deployment of thousands of police on the ground to deal with the bandh.

The bill was sent to the President for his consent.

The state highways and markets are shut. Public transport, including long distance bus services, are also hit as taxi and autorickshaw unions are supporting the bandh.

The opposition calims the government wants to acquire the tribal land along with the forest lands in the name of development.

However, the BJP says that this amendment will open doors for development in the state.

According to the state government, the amendment in the Land Acquisition Act has not been introduced to benefit any industrialist. Also, the land will be acquired without the consent of their owners and local residents.

The government will ensure that people affected by land acquisition get four times the compensation.
