- Shivakumar is in charge of looking after 44 MLAs from Gujarat who have been lodged at the resort.
- The resort belongs to Shivakumar’s younger brother.
- The I-T department, clarified that it is not searching Gujarat Congress MLAs who are staying at the resort.
The Income Tax department on Wednesday morning raided Karnataka energy minister DK Shivakumar’s residence as well as Eagleton Golf Resortwhere Congress Gujarat legislators (MLAs) are staying. The raids began at 7am.
Shivakumar is in charge of looking after 44 MLAs from Gujarat who have been lodged at the resort after they landed from Ahmedabad last Saturday. They were moved, reportedly to prevent the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from poaching them ahead of the Rajya Sabha poll in Gujarat on August 8.
The resort is located in the Bengaluru Rural Lok Sabha constituency represented by Congress lawmaker DK Suresh, who is Shivakumar’s younger brother.
The Income Tax department, however, clarified that it is not searching Gujarat Congress MLAs who are staying at Eagleton Golf Resort.
“The minister being searched was staying at a resort near Bangalore where some MLAs from another state are put up. Hence the minister’s room alone is being searched. The search team has no concern with the MLAs and there has been no contact with MLAs and the search team,” the I-T department said in a press release.
“The search is the continuation of an investigation which has been in progress for a considerable period of time. The timing of the search was decided well in advance. The events involving certain MLAs of another state being brought to Karnataka were unforeseen and unpredictable events,” the income tax department said.
