Huawei Nova 3, Nova 3i launched with dual rear and front cameras: Price, specs & everything to know

Huawei launched two new mid-range flagship phones, the Nova 3 and the Nova 3i, in India on Thursday.

The Nova 3 and the Nova 3i are essentially souped up versions of the P20 Lite, bringing top-tier design and hardware to the masses. In India, the Nova 3 will cost Rs 34,999 for the 6GB RAM and 128GB storage version, while the Nova 3i will cost Rs 20,999 for the 4GB RAM and 128GB storage version. Both the Nova 3 and the Nova 3i will be exclusively available for buying from Amazon India.

The Nova 3 and the Nova 3i take a lot of inspiration from the Huawei P20 and P20 Pro, if you were to talk about looks and feel. Much like the P20 and the P20 Pro, the Nova 3 and the Nova 3i also boast of 3D glass and metal design. Both the phones are big and bezel-less and will be available in Iris Purple colour option.

On the front, both the Nova 3 and the Nova 3i come with a notch up top — that you can also hide via software — like the P20 and the P20 Pro, and chin at the bottom. The setup entails in phones that can boast of a screen-to-body ratio of an upwards of 80 per cent. But there’s more to the Nova 3 and the Nova 3i than just the looks and feel. Both the phones pack capable hardware and dual cameras on the front as well as on the back. Both the phones also run the very latest in Android software.

The Huawei Nova 3 comes with a 6.3-inch Full View full-HD+ IPS LCD display with a 2280×1080 pixel resolution and 19.5:9 aspect ratio. It is powered by Huawei’s in-house Kirin 970 processor that packs in its own dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) for enabling dedicated AI functions inside the Nova 3. This is the same processor that powers the high-end P20 Pro. The Nova 3 comes with up to 6GB of RAM and up to 128GB of internal storage which is also expandable via a hybrid micro-SD card slot. The dual-SIM phone runs Android 8.1 Oreo-based EMUI 8.2.

The Nova 3, Huawei has confirmed, will support its GPU Turbo technology and come pre-installed with graphically intensive games such as PUBG and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, and will also provide 10 different vibrations for 30 different scenarios within these games including shots, explosions and quakes.

GPU Turbo technology is Huawei’s in-house graphics processing acceleration technology achieved through hardware and software integration resulting in “smoother and faster mobile gaming experience.” Games will apparently play with up to 60 per cent more graphics processing efficiency, while consuming up to 30 per cent less energy thanks to GPU Turbo, claims the company, adding that the technology will allow even standard games to render in HDR.

On to photography, the Nova 3 has the same dual rear cameras as the Honor 10. This dual camera system consists of one 16-megapixel colour or RGB sensor and another 24-megapixel monochrome sensor. Both of them have an aperture of f/1.8 and also there’s PDAF for fast focusing. The two cameras work in the same fashion as other dual camera Honor phones. While one sensor takes colour shots, the other takes the same shot in black and white. The phone’s software algorithm then merges both the images into one and creates the final photo. The monochrome images can take in more light and more contrast than coloured photos. So basically, the phone can ideally take better low-light photos than rival top-tier phones thanks to its dual-lens system.

On the front, the Nova 3, comes with a dual camera system consisting of one 24-megapixel sensor and another 2-megapixel sensor for depth sensing.

Moving on, the Nova 3 is backed by a 3,750mAh battery. The phone charges via USB Type-C and supports fast charging.

The Nova 3i has the same design, the same display, the same software and the same dual front cameras. The phone has more toned down hardware and rear camera credentials though. The Nova 3i is powered by a Kirin 710 processor with up to 4GB of RAM and up to 128GB of storage. It ships with a 16+2MP dual camera setup on the rear and is further backed by a 3,340mAh battery.

While the Nova 3 has been launched in India for Rs 34,999 the Nova 3i will cost buyers Rs 20,999. Both the phones will be available for buying from Amazon India. While the Nova 3i will be available for buying from August 7, the Nova 3 will be available from August 23.
