Hollywood council votes to remove Trump’s star from Walk of Fame

The West Hollywood councillors in the US have voted unanimously in order to remove US President Donald Trump’s star from the Walk of Fame.

The star, which was installed back in 2007, has been vandalised multiple times ever since President Trump took office. Trump’s star was last destroyed in July in a pickaxe attack.

The West Hollywood City Council on Monday evening decided to recommend Chamber of Commerce that the star should be removed permanently.

“West Hollywood City council unanimously passes a resolution asking the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to remove the Donald Trump star on Hollywood Walk of Fame,” tweeted West Hollywood mayor John Duran.

However, Hollywood’s Chamber of Commerce in the past had said that it would not remove a star. The chamber denied the removal of Kevin Spacey and Bill Cosby’s stars after they both were exposed in the Hollywood sexual harassment scandal. The chamber also backed the decision by claiming that the stars represent the history of the American entertainment industry and hence, shouldn’t be removed.

West Hollywood Council produced papers saying that a number of disturbing instances of Mr Trump’s behaviour towards women had emerged during and after the 2016 presidential election campaign. The papers also listed numerous instances where Trump’s behaviour was found to be objectionable, including separation of children from their parents at the Mexico border and withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement.

According to Independent.co.uk, the report said that the star on the Walk of Fame is a privilege that is highly sought after by those in the entertainment industry.

“Allowing Mr Trump to continue to have a star in light of his behaviour towards women, particularly in the #timesup and #metoo movements, should not be acceptable in the Hollywood and entertainment industry communities.” the report said.

24-year-old Austin Mikel Clay, who vandalised the star in July, was charged for on Monday. However, this is not the first time that someone has tried to break the star. In 2016, a man was filmed breaking the star with a sledgehammer. Many people have spat and spray painted on the US President’s star on the Walk of Fame as well.
