Having won many a matches for India on the cricket field, the hit opening pair of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir will now be padding up together off the field after being named in the newly formed Cricket Committee of Delhi and Districts Cricket Association (DDCA).
The DDCA on Wednesday announced the formation of the committee led by former India captain Virender Sehwag, along with former Test opener Aakash Chopra and Rahul Sanghvi.
Gambhir was also named as a special invitee to the committee.
“The Cricket Committee is authorised to form various selection committees as per the recommendations made by the Lodha Committee and the BCCI guidelines for the state association and to give valuable guidance to the association for the improvement of cricket in Delhi,” the DDCA said in a statement.
Confirming the development in a series of tweets, newly elected DDCA President Rajat Sharma wrote: “I am pleased to share with you the constitution of Cricket Committee as per the recommendations made by the Lodha Committee and the BCCI guidelines for the state associations.”
Earlier this month, newly elected DDCA secretary Vinod Tihara had declared that senior opener Gambhir will be back as “government nominee” in the board.
Gambhir was cornered during the 17 month regime of High Court-appointed administrator Justice Vikramajit Sen.
He was appointed government nominee last year but Justice Sen made it clear that he won’t be allowed as long as he remains an active cricketer.
However, after Rajat Sharma panel swept to victory in the DDCA elections, secretary Tihara made it clear that they have grand plans for Gambhir. And now they have not only brought Gambhir back in the fray but also roped in his former opening partner Sehwag.
Interestingly, Rajat Sharma in his press release stated that the appointments have been done as per Lodha Committee recommendations, however, the powers and scope of the committee has again given rise to questions on Conflict of Interest.
Some of the questions being asked are how can Gambhir, being an active cricketer, have a say in selection of selectors, who will in turn select him?
Sehwag on the other hand, has a cricket academy and is also an expert on the channel owned by the DDCA president himself.
Sanghvi meanwhile, is associated with IPL franchise Mumbai Indians while Chopra is an expert on various news channels.
DDCA secretary Vinod Tihara admitted that this is a practical issue but for them paramount was having the top names in Delhi cricket on board.
Asked if the committee will be honorary or get remuneration, Tihara told PTI: “We haven’t decided on that part but Gautam will be a special invitee.”
When further asked if he would have a say in selection of selectors and coach, Tihara replied: “Of course he would have a role. I understand your question on Conflict of Interest but if we strictly follow Lodha recommendations, we won’t get quality people on cricket committee.
“For us it was important that we form a panel that has eminence and knowledge. This panel has both. If we start nitpicking, we will not get good enough people,” Tihara said.
