SRK covered an open terrace adjoining to his office and converted it into canteen which was a fire trap, said BMC officials. Khan approached court to get stay order but was unable to get any relief after which the BMC decided to demolish the illegal structure.
The BMC has demolished illegal canteen of actor Shah Rukh Khan’s production house, Red Chillies, at Malad (West) on Thursday.
Khan had covered an open terrace adjoining to his office and converted it into canteen which was a fire trap said BMC official.
Khan along with his wife, Gauri, owns Red Chillies Entertainment Pvt Ltd and they have purchased entire fourth floor of a 16-storey DLH Park Building at Sunder Nagar in Malad for post-production work. Khan had converted the terrace measuring around 2,000 square ft attached to the floor into a canteen for his staff and office visitors. Around 316 staff are employed in the office.
As per Red Chillies spokesperson, “Red chillies Vfx is a tenant and not the owner of the property mentioned. The building has an open area outside with seating which employees use for eating food that they get from home. It is not an operational canteen. However, due to a misunderstanding, the part which the BMC demolished are the energy saving solar panels which provided clean energy to the entire Vfx division. Red Chillies Vfx is taking this up with the concerned authorities at the BMC.”
Assistant municipal commissioner and ward officer Chanda Jadhav said, “The terrace needs to be remain open to sky, but they have changed it into usable area. They have covered the terrace which is violation of FSI rule and fire safety norms.”
BMC have acted against several other celebrities in the past, and recently they served demolition notices to actors Rani Mukherjee and Sonu Sood for illegal alterations into their bungalow and restaurant respectively. Mukherjee’s application to regularize the illegal alteration is pending before the civic authority’s building proposal department and Sood has obtained a stay order against the demolition from court.
An activist said that the BMC targets celebrities just to publicize that the civic authority is doing its work, but in reality they are not acting against many establishment and societies for gross violations despite repeated complaints.
Civic officials denied the allegation stating that they act on complaint after verifying the facts.
BMC officials said that in July, they have received a complaint stating that Shah Rukh Khan has made illegal alteration at his office premises in Malad (West) and committed various irregularities.
The BMC officials visited the premises and during inspection they found that the terrace was covered and in use as an office canteen which was against the rule. The BMC subsequently issued a notice asking Khan for removal of the illegal alteration.
Khan approach the court to get stay order but was unable to get any relief after which the BMC decided to demolish the illegal structure.
