BJP MLAs get swanky laptops, students have to wait longer

After almost a year of coming into power, the state government has started giving laptops and printers to legislatures but the ruling party is yet to fulfill its poll promise of “gifting laptops” to meritorious students.

Finance department officials told TOI that funds were cleared two months ago and the laptops had been purchased by the state assembly secretariat. It is learnt that 71 laptops and printers have been purchased and all the legislatures are being informed. Secretary state assembly secretariat, Jagdish Chand said that the legislatures would have to collect their laptop and printer from the state assembly secretariat.

The BJP’s vision document released by union finance minister Arun Jaitley in Dehradun, had pledged to give laptops to meritorious students, and that is yet to be done.

BJP state chief, Ajay Bhatt, said, “The legislatures get the laptops as a facility and there is nothing wrong in that. And as far as giving laptops to the meritorious students are concerned, the exercise has been started by the legislatures in their respective constituency.”

However, Congress leaders are unsparing to the ruling party for the delay in delivering on the promise. Congress leader and former MLA, Navprabhat, said, “It is a sad reality of this double-engine BJP government in Uttarakhand that even promises made to schoolchildren are being conveniently forgotten.”
