BHU’s Vice Chancellor Invited More Trouble For Himself

Already in troubled waters after the episode of violence against girl students, Banaras Hindu University vice chancellor seemingly invited more trouble for himself on Wednesday evening when he held a meeting with inmates of a girls’ hostel in Triveni complex.

In a video of this meeting recorded by some participants on mobile, VC GC Tripathi is heard telling the girls, ” Koi bhi dharm ki baat karne ka adhikar usi ko hai jo khud dharm par chale. Tum ye batao ki ladkiyo ne dharm ka palan kiya ki ek ladki ki asmita ko lekar bazar me pahuchi . (Only those can talk about ‘dharma’ (duty) who perform their duty well. You tell, whether girls performed their duty by talking the modesty of a girl in the market).”

This video of the conversation between VC and girls went viral on the social media on Thursday evening. The video shows a girl asking Tripathi: ” Sir aap dharm se batayiye ki kya ladkiyo par lathicharge karna theek hai (Sir, please tell us whether cane charge on girls was correct).” After teaching about duty, the VC said, ” 20 baar tumhari senior teachers ne samjhaya (On several occasions your senior teachers spoke to you and tried to persuade you).” Tripathi further continued, ” Kai baar hua hadsa jara batao. Kai baar hostel aya koi ek baar bataya hadsa hua (How many times untoward incidents occurred? I came to the hostels several times, had anybody told me about such incidents?).”

After this meeting, the BHU had issued a press note mentioning that during the meeting the VC told the girls that senior students of physical education would be recruited as women security guards in proctorial board under earn-while-learn scheme of the varsity. On Thursday, the VC also appointed Royana Singh as the chief proctor of varsity.
