Members of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike along with BJP leaders protested against the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) decision to rename a circle in the city as Tipu Circle.
According to sources, Bengaluru government has planned to change the name of Bellahalli circle to Tipu circle soon.
Sources told India Today TV that Karnataka Congress leader and law minister Krishna Byre Gowda came out with this proposal. But pro-Hindu groups want it to renamed after Basavalingappa instead who was a senior Congress and dalit leader from the area.
A senior protester told India Today TV that Basavalingappa is seen as a junior Ambedkar in the area. “They are doing this for vote bank politics. Tipu was against the Kodava, Malabar and Mangaluru Christians. He also demolished many churches in Mangaluru. How can he be a freedom fighter, he is a murderer,” he said.
Similarly, Dr. CN Ashwathnarayan who represents BJP from Malleshwaram constituency said that the government should try to avoid these kinds of polarization or instigation of people. He also added that Tipu was known as a good warrior but he was also responsible for killings and conversions. “The government is misusing their power. They should get out of all these things and respect the sentiments of the people,” he says.
However, Congress is okay with the decision. Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) working president Eshwar Khandre told India Today TV that Tipu was a nationalist and the BJP is only trying to communalise the issue. “These people only want to divide the society and that is their moto. People have understood their plans and will give them a befitting reply,” he said.
