DEHRADUN: The Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment, a unit of DRDO, issued an avalanche warning on Wednesday for Himalayan states, including five districts of Uttarakhand, between December 13 evening and December 14 evening.
Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Pithoragarh and Tehri districts have been marked unsafe.
Chief secretary Utpal Kumar Singh issued an advisory to all five district magistrates following this, asking them to remain alert and prepared to tackle any emergency situation.
The warning states that people in Uttarakhand’s hilly districts, especially Chamoli (which has been marked as having medium avalanche danger), should not venture in avalanche-prone slopes and keep clearing snow from their roofs to avoid sudden collapses.
While the remaining four districts are under danger level category 1, Chamoli is at 3.
People have been asked to avoid slopes and select routes should be traversed with caution. The bulletin states that moderate to heavy snowfall has been observed in these areas during the last 24 hours and light snowfall may continue for the next 24 hours.
