Assam NRC final draft: MP Badruddin Ajmal missing from 1st list, citizen in 2nd

The final draft of Assam National Register of Citizens was published today. The list identifies 2.89 crore people as citizens of India. More than 40 lakh names have been left out of the list.

Interestingly, Assam MP Badruddin Ajmal’s name has featured in the final draft of the NRC. Ajmal’s name was missing from the first draft of the NRC, which was released in December 2017.

The first draft of Assam NRC came out in December 2017. Badruddin Ajmal, the chief of All India United Democratic Fund and MP from Dhubri, was among the 1.4 crore people whose names did not feature in the first draft.

Badruddin had earlier claimed that the process of updating the NRC was being politicised. He said that though the process is being carried under the orders of the Supreme Court, he feared that BJP and Congress may use ground level workers to manipulate the process.

Badruddin had also said that once it is clear that who is a citizen and who is a foreigner, it will put an end to vote bank politics in and harrassment of certain communities in Assam.

Actress turned MLA Angoorlata Deka, NRC coordinator and Assam Home Secretary Prateek Hajela, ULFA(I) Commander-in-chief Paresh Barua and family members of Chief Adviser of All Assam Student’s Union Samujjal Bhattacharya were also excluded from the first draft.
