All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief Asaddudin Owaisi on Tuesday attacked the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) national president Amit Shah on the final draft of the National Register of Citizen (NRC) in Assam.
BJP president has lashed out on former United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government and alleged that no previous governments have shown courage to act on illegal Bangladeshi migrants.
Reacting on the statement made by BJP president who spoke in Rajya Sabha, the Lok Sabha MP Owaisi asked “If a politician or Shah says that 40 lakh people living outside the NRC draft are illegal immigrants, the Supreme Court should take cognisance of such a strange statement, because it is contempt of court. What about BJP MLA Ramakanta Deuri? Is it because his name is also out of NRCs draft?”
Referring to Assam Accord signed on 15 August, 1985 between the Government of India and representatives of Assam movement in presence of the then Prime Minister Rajeev Gandhi, Owaisi said “According to Assam Accord, both illegal immigrants irrespective of religion should be detected. Protecting Hindu Bangladeshis by BJP is against the Citizenship Amendment Bill.”
BJP president, while addressing the upper house during the discussion on NRC, has said that the exercise was conducted as per Assam Accord which the previous governments never implemented on the ground.
The address of Amit shah witnessed uproar in the Rajya Sabha, where opposition MPs including Congress lawmakers forced adjournment.
