One person died and 13 were injured in a shooting incident in Toronto late Sunday evening. The incident happened in the downtown Toronto neighbourhood known as Greektown.
Toronto Police said that the shooter is dead as well.
The shooting has till now claimed the life of a woman. A young girl who was injured in the shooting is in a critical condition, Toronto Police said.
The condition of the other victims is not known yet. Toronto Police spokesman Mark Pugash said it’s too early to say whether the shooting is terrorism.
Eyewitness John Tulloch says he and his brother had just gotten out of their car on Danforth when he heard about 20 to 30 gunshots.
“We just ran. We saw people starting to run so we just ran,” he said.
Multiple ambulances and other first responders were present at the shooting scene in Toronto with several people being treated by paramedics.
Toronto is grappling with a sharp rise in gun violence this year. Deaths from gun violence in the city jumped 53 per cent to 26 so far in 2018 from the same period last year, police data last week showed, with the number of shootings rising 13 per cent.
Toronto deployed about 200 police officers from July 20 in response to the recent spate in shootings, which city officials have blamed on gang violence.
