12 things you probably didn’t know​ about Mukesh Ambani

Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), Mukesh Ambani is an established business magnate.

He joined the Board of Reliance in 1977 and has since taken the company from textiles to polyester fibres, petrochemicals, petroleum refining and telecommunication. With a net income of $47.3 billion (as of October 2018), Ambani has topped Forbes’ annual list of 100 richest Indians for 11 years in a row.

Ambani graduated in chemical engineering from Institute of Chemical Technology in Mumbai and went on to enroll in an MBA programme at Stanford University in California, U.S. But he had to discontinue the course after his father, Dhirubhai Ambani (pictured C), called him back to help start a yarn manufacturing plant.

In his school years, Ambani was a huge fan of hockey. In a 2008 interview with The New York Times, he said, “We never studied. We went out and learned how to play hockey.” Despite his previous interest in hockey, later on in his life, he and his wife, Nita Ambani, went on to co-own an Indian Premier League (IPL) team, Mumbai Indians.

He is believed to be the only businessman in India to have been provided Z-category security of the central government. Having Z-category security cover means he is protected by an armed commando squad at all times. His wife has been provided with Y-category security.

Despite being a high-flying businessman, he is still in touch with his humble roots and prefers to spend Sundays catching up with his family.

In 2018, Institute for Competitiveness estimated that Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd., one of Reliance’s flagship projects, will be instrumental in expanding India’s per capita gross domestic product (GDP) by nearly 5.65 percent.

Ambani commissioned the world’s largest grassroots petroleum refinery in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The work on the refinery, which has a capacity of 660,000 barrels per day, was completed in 2000. Another 580,000 barrels-per-day refinery soon followed. The cumulative capacity of the refinery hub is 1.24 million barrels of oil per day.

The Reliance Industries chief earns an annual salary of Rs. 15 crores. This amount has stayed unchanged in the last ten years in accordance with “his desire to continue to set a personal example for moderation in managerial compensation levels.”

Ambani owns one of world’s most expensive residential properties, Antilia. The 27-storey skyscraper in South Mumbai requires a 600-member staff for its maintenance. It has six underground floors dedicated to parking and three helicopter pads. It can also withstand a magnitude eight earthquake.

The business tycoon enjoys a particular affinity toward automobile and reportedly owns over 168 cars. His collection includes Mercedes-Maybach Benz S660 Guard, Aston Martin Rapide, Rolls Royce Phantom (pictured), Bentley Continental Flying Spur and the completely bulletproof BMW 760Li.
